Kohler presents immersive installation made from reclaimed materials

Promotion: Beirut-based designer Nada Debs has partnered with bathroom and kitchen brand Kohler and Design Miami curator Maria Cristina Didero to create Transcendence, an immersive “hammam installation”.

The exhibition is a modern interpretation of a traditional Middle Eastern bath known as a hammam, and incorporates new and archival Kohler designs in a bid to represent the ethos behind them.

“Having the opportunity to design a modern hammam at Design Miami truly embodies the sentiment that well-being transcends all culture,” said Debs. “I am excited to offer such a unique experience to the industry.”

Spanning three rooms, Transcendence featured Kohler WasteLAB tiles, designed in collaboration with Debs. Kohler WasteLAB is a part of the brand that makes products and materials from waste materials left over from the manufacturing process.

The tiles‘ patterns were designed by Debs to reflect the traditional hammam’s style in shape, pattern and colour, while the use of recycled materials aims to mirror the cultural experience of “rebirth” by “cleansing the body and mind”.

The exhibition also included vintage Kohler sinks made in 1927 to pay homage to the “global brand’s heritage and long standing leadership in colour and design”.

Kohler also hosted a panel discussion with Debs and chief sustainability and diversity, equality and inclusion officer at Kohler, Laura Kohler, which was moderated by Maria Cristina Didero.

The discussion evaluated how the collaboration between businesses can create sustainable designs and confront societal changes.
