A group of investors named Flannery Associates has announced plans to convert 50,000 acres of farmland into a city in Solano county, northern California.
The plans have reportedly triggered disapproval by the local community due to Flannery Associates’ quiet buying up of farmland.
The planned city prompted a fiery debate amongst readers. One questioned why the group isn’t using its “wealth, power, and political influence” to resolve existing problems, whilst another theorised that the project aims to “evoke a sense of nostalgia and simplicity”.
Other stories in this week’s newsletter that fired up the comments section included the reveal of RIBA’s shortlist for the 2023 Stirling Prize, a replica racing car built entirely out of electronic waste by Lazerian and Neri&Hu’s design for Chinese furniture brand Camerich’s factory.
