Ingredients and Variations

Apples – While any apples will do, we like Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji, or Granny Smith apples because they stay firmer after baking.

Sweeter varieties like golden delicious, or pink lady are other great options.

Streusel Topping – A mixture of oats, dark or light brown sugar, nuts, and butter makes a golden topping that can be used on all kinds of baked fruit like peaches and pears.

Variations

  • Add other warm spices to the topping like a pinch of nutmeg, or even apple pie spice.
  • Swap out the pecans for walnuts, coconut, or other nuts.
  • Cranberries, raisins, candied ginger, or even a bit of orange peel/rind can be added to the mix.
  • Drizzle with a little maple syrup if you’d like.

How to Bake Apples

  1. Prep Apples: Cut the apples vertically and scoop out the seeds and a bit of apple with a spoon or paring knife.
  2. Prep Topping: Combine the topping ingredients as directed in the recipe below.
  3. Bake: Place the apples in a baking dish and add a heaping spoonful of streusel on each apple.
  4. Cover and bake until the apples are tender and the topping is crispy and browned.

Tips

  • If you have an apple corer, core the apples before cutting. I cut the apples in half and used a melon baller in the images above.
  • Don’t peel the apples, the skins hold it all together.
  • If preparing ahead of time brush the cut side of the apples with a bit of lemon juice to keep them from browning.
  • Different varieties of apples will have varying cook times. Check the apples early and cook just until tender. If the apples are overcooked, they may burst out of the skins.

Baked apples are perfect on their own, but are absolutely heavenly served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Spoon any juices in the pan over the apples.

How to Store Baked Apples

Leftover baked apples don’t last long in the refrigerator because there are so many ways to use them!
