A how-to guide for establishing yourself in a new industry

Getting started in a brand-new industry is rarely easy. There’s so much knowledge you need to learn and skills you need to pick up, many of which may be completely new to you. The good news is that today’s society is highly geared towards helping people switch careers at any stage in their life. No longer do we have to be restricted to what we chose to do when we were 16 years old! Of course, you still need to work hard if you want to make your job change a success. Ready to take the plunge? Here are some tactics to help you hit the ground running.

Embrace lifelong learning

One of the first actions to take is ensuring that you have the appropriate attitude for your career change. A key part of this is being open to continuous professional education. Does your dream job require you to have a Master’s degree? Go enroll on one. Would speaking a second language help you make inroads in this industry? Sign up for a course. Do you need to master a new piece of equipment or software? Find a teacher. By approaching every business situation with a curious and open mind, you’ll be setting yourself up for success.

Outsource

When you’re getting started in a brand-new industry, there will inevitably be tasks you can’t do by yourself. This could be because you don’t have the necessary knowledge and skills yet, or it might be a more practical problem of a lack of space or equipment. This is where outsourcing comes in. You can get an expert external company to handle those aspects of your business you are currently unable to do yourself, either on a temporary or permanent basis. For instance, a company such as RIG can reliably take care of preventative maintenance services for you.

Make the most of technology

Technology makes our lives easier in so many ways, not least in the workplace. These days you can get specialist software and hardware to assist you with all sorts of different business tasks, from accounting and HR to manufacturing and postage. This makes it much easier for you to branch out into new territory by investing in innovative technology and equipment. Do some research into your chosen industry and see what the experts recommend, with careful consideration of your budget and goals.

Put yourself out there

In many cases, business success comes down to who you know as much as what you know. That’s why networking is such a crucial skill to cultivate. Put yourself out there by attending conferences and workshops which are relevant to the industry you want to move into, and strike up conversations with as many people as you can. Not all of these potential relationships will thrive, but even if just a couple do, it can make all the difference. Another tactic is to try reaching out to people online (for example via social media) to ask for advice. Most people are happy to help others as long as you’re not directly competing against one another, so be brave and make a name for yourself!
